Introduction
This page contains the Channel Rules of Undernet IRC's
#Linux as as a Linux-related FAQ. In this document we state the
rules of our channel, give a description of what the channel is all
about, and answer some common questions asked in the channel.
Please read them, they
are posted here for a reason! Failure to do so could result in you
being very unceremoniously kicked out!
In former revisions of this FAQ, it was fairly clearly implied
that #linux is a help channel. #linux is not first and foremost
a help channel. It is not our sole intention in life
to help newbies with every little trip-up they encounter. We are
likely to help if you follow the channel rules and guidelines for getting help. If
you ignore either of these heavy hints, be prepared to be unceremoniously evicted.
To summarise: #linux is a place for Linux users to socialise.
Social discourse may include problem solving, but not necessarily.
This best reflects the nature of #linux.
After all this ranting I should of course point you to a place
where you can get some of your newbie questions answered.
On Undernet you can find #linuxhelp, which is specially geared for
this service. Do read their channel guidelines too.
Having said all that, this FAQ also covers technical questions,
so read on. If your question is not answered here, send mail to PolarWolf. Don't
expect anything to happen. You may get a reply, your
question may be put in the FAQ or may be ignored completely. What
happens entirely depends on how busy I am, how easily answered the
question is and how relevent the question is. (Hint: Good English
is likely to elicit a better response than poor English. You would
be careful about your english in a formal business letter, why
should email be any different?)
The initial founder of this faq is Aiel, subsequent maintainers
were a guy who wants to remain anonymous and Strix. I'd like to
thank all for their work on which I (PolarWolf) can now build
on.
