Think before you do anything to anyone/everyone

If you're considering pinging all of #linux, don't. The same goes for mass version/finger requests, DCC lists, and sounds.

If you're thinking of port scanning someone, don't. Port scanning is considered a very obnoxious and rude thing to do. If you get caught, you may well be permanently (as opposed to temporarily) kick-banned from #linux. If you're exceptionally unlucky, someone might complain to your Internet Service Provider (it's easy to find out who that is) and have them remove your account.

Port scanning is just not worth the trouble.

Along a similar vein is telnetting to another IRC user's box without permission. Attempting to connect to someone else's telnet, imap and pop ports without their permission is likely to get you kicked.

Because in the past people were matched doing portscans and other nastiness with being in IRC channels starting with- or containing the word "hack" some ops have become rather allergic to people which reside in #hack* affiliated channels. The result is also allergic, the person caught in such a channel is likely to be kicked. Bitching and whining about it will not do you much good might you be the kickee, and will only strengthen the decision not to bother with you at all.
