  • Repaired various broken links (not all yet)

Nov 17, 2002
  • Added a faq mirror to the intro.
Oct 6, 2002
Aug 25, 2002
  • Added a splash screen at many's request. As I didn't know what to put it, I also added datestamps to each faq entry so I can present a list of recently changed sections there.
  • Added a "messages" section for stuff we'd like people to see upfront. Lessee how that works out.
Jun 30, 2002
  • New section with recommended reading here
  • Some renumbering to keep the ordering straight
Jun 23, 2002

  • Edited the section on tar to include proper syntax for bzip2'ed tarballs
  • Rewrote the section on kernel compiles.
  • Added a paragraph on NTFS access in this section
  • Added a reference to Partition Magic in here
  • Deactivated some irrlevant sections
  • Edited this section to reflect reality.
  • Fixed heaps of links, mainly the ones referring to various old locations of the LDP. I wish they stopped changing location every 6 months!
Jun 21, 2002
  • Added a link to the Clueless Newbie FAQ in the /etc section.
Jun 14, 2002

Various updates have been done between this and the last entry. Not much content has been added or updated, but in the backend there have been some changes. All content is now kept in a postgres database, with a webfrontend for administration. There have been a couple of changes in the hosting area, etc. Not much of interrest, really. A few things regarding the faq itself:

  • Restructured the changelog, removed all layout tags, cleaned up the html
  • Changed link in Hall of Lame to http://reconfig.net/~silsor/lame.html
  • Edited reference to romanian #linux channels as requested by romanians
  • Added a link to linmodems to the winmodems page
  • Updated the "Be polite to dumb terminals" rule to reflect a better way to teach BitchX the ways to polite IRC
  • Added a link to the Linux Security Administrator Guide
  • Updated the firewalling section
  • Added AMES to the /etc section
  • Added a section on getting scroll mice to work in X
  • Added some comments on where to get slackware iso images...why anyone would want to is beyond me though.
  • Changed the section on where to get a Debian ISO image to a generic section on where to get debian images.
  • Removes the "Where can I download RedHat 6.0 ISO images" and the "How to burn a RedHat image to CD" below that. I want to keep this less specific. A section on how to toast CDs is in the making.
Dec 11, 2001
  • Added reference to #linuxhelp and their website
  • Modified "Stay on topic", added a couple of references to other channels
  • Modified "Language", included #rolinux, #linux.de, #linux.nl and #linux.se.
  • Added a comment to "Don't ask for shells"
  • Added UnLinux to "Don't Run Bots on #Linux"
  • Added domain bans to the "Kicks in #linux" section
  • Added Comic chat to the list of "How to get kicked out of #linux" reasons
  • Added http://www.tuxedo.org/ esr/faqs/smart-questions.html to "Getting help on #linux"
  • Fixed URL in the linux-laptops section, removed the snafu link (dead)
  • Restructured "Who should use linux", added a link to http://www.linux.org, merged "who should not use linux" and the link to whynotlinux.html
  • Various other tidbits

Something is b0rk with latex2html's output...faq editing put on hold for a bit, time to put this in a decent format.

Late April

Transcribed the FAQ into latex. Made a number of modifications and corrections to the FAQ too numerous to list complete. Things I can think of:
